Programs. Community-Based Program:"Bigs,"mentors, and "Littles," mentees, are matched one-to-one, spending 4 to 6 hours per month together. School-Based Program:Bigs and Littles meet 1 hour a week during the school year at the Little's school site; they eat lunch together, play on the jungle gym, and work on homework together. Nationwide SuccessesA study conducted by Public/Private Ventures, non-profit research institute, examined over 1,000 matches during a 2-year period. Findings from this study confirm the major impact that mentoring relationships have on Littles in our programs: 46% less likely to start using drugs; 27% less likely to start using alcohol; 52% less likely to skip a class. (The youth not only skipped school less but also earned slightly higher grades and felt better about how they were doing in school); 1/3 less likely to hit someone else; and more trusting of their parents or guardians, less likely to lie to them, and felt more supported and less criticized by ther peers and friends. |
